Apple is preparing iPhone Handoff for iOS 27, a feature that could let one phone number move between two iPhones. The reported design uses a main iPhone and a companion iPhone, with the active device changing when the user hands off the number.
Apple’s developer documentation describes an underlying iPhone quick switch system with active, passive, not-enrolled, and failed states. MacRumors reports that the main iPhone keeps the primary eSIM while the companion iPhone receives a companion eSIM. The two devices may then switch between active and passive use of the number.
This does not establish that both iPhones will ring or use cellular data simultaneously. Apple has not published final consumer instructions covering emergency calls, roaming, voicemail, messaging, or every activation condition.
Carrier support is the key limitation
Compatible software alone will not guarantee access: a carrier must provision the companion eSIM. Reports have pointed to T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany as possible early participants, but neither is a final worldwide compatibility list. Existing services such as T-Mobile DIGITS and AT&T NumberSync are separate products and do not confirm iPhone Handoff support.
A beta demonstration begins on the second iPhone in Settings > Cellular, where the reported iPhone Handoff option appears under Add eSIM. Menu names and activation rules may change before release. Users should wait for Apple and their carrier to publish supported models, plans, regions, and instructions.
