iOS 27 Apple Mail changes: smarter search, Siri help, and faster everyday use
Apple is giving Mail a relevance-focused search system in iOS 27, alongside Siri-powered actions, writing help, contextual suggestions, and performance fixes. The update is still in beta, so features and behavior may change before the fall release.
Apple Mail is getting a practical overhaul in iOS 27. The biggest change is search: Apple says Mail will use a new ranking system to put more relevant results first, including messages buried deep in an inbox. The update also brings more ways to use Siri with email, quicker actions for information such as reservations and deliveries, and a set of fixes aimed at making Mail feel less sluggish.
This is based on Apple’s iOS 27 preview and the current iOS 27.0 beta 8 release notes. iOS 27 remains prerelease software, and Apple can change, delay, limit, or remove features before the public release.
Search should be more useful than matching words
Apple’s headline Mail improvement is a new ranking system for search. Instead of relying mainly on the exact words typed and message recency, the system is intended to surface results based more on relevance and what the user appears to mean. That should help when the email you need is old, buried, or mixed in with promotional messages from the same sender.
In testing the beta, 9to5Mac saw an “Expanded Search Results” explanation in Mail saying that the app can look for more results based on meaning, not just the words entered. MacRumors likewise reported that a search for a retailer could prioritize an order over marketing messages from that retailer. These examples describe beta behavior, not a guarantee that every search will produce the right result.
The change is available to iPhones that support iOS 27, according to MacRumors. It is separate from the more demanding Apple Intelligence features, so users should still see the core search redesign even if their iPhone does not support Apple Intelligence.
Siri can work with the message you are reading
On iPhones that support Apple Intelligence, Mail can use Siri to help with the contents of an email. MacRumors reports that users can long-press a message and ask Siri to summarize it, find details such as a flight number or package information, save a photo, or carry out related actions. Siri can also take actions such as deleting messages from a specified sender or adding information from an email to Reminders.
Apple’s own preview describes Siri AI as able to search across emails and other personal content, and to take actions across apps. That could make an email a starting point for a task rather than a dead end: a reservation can lead to a calendar event, or a delivery message can provide information for tracking. Siri’s answers and actions should still be checked before they are relied on, especially for travel, orders, and other time-sensitive details.
Writing help is built into the compose screen
Apple says Write with Siri can generate an email draft, provide feedback, and adjust wording. In Messages and Mail, Apple says the feature can match a user’s writing style, punctuation, and tone. MacRumors also reports that the beta offers help with rewording, changing the style of a draft, writing tips, and typo and grammar checking.
This is best understood as an optional writing assistant, not an automatic replacement for reviewing a message. The feature depends on Apple Intelligence-compatible hardware, and Apple’s availability language means language and regional support may differ.
More one-tap actions from email context
Mail’s contextual suggestions are designed to turn details in an email into quick actions. Apple gives examples such as adding a calendar event or searching for a photo based on the conversation. MacRumors reports that messages containing a flight time or restaurant reservation can offer a Calendar action, directions can offer a Maps route, and tracking information can connect to Wallet.
Apple also says these suggestions are coming to third-party apps, although the exact behavior will depend on the app and its support. At launch, Apple labels contextual suggestions as coming in English, so users should not assume the same actions will appear in every language or region.
Call Context can surface an email detail during a call
When calling a business, Call Context can proactively show relevant information from across the user’s apps. Apple’s example is a flight confirmation code from Mail appearing while calling an airline. MacRumors reports that the feature may also surface a reservation number or retailer order number.
Apple says Call Context looks at who the user is calling and does not use the call audio. It is an Apple Intelligence feature, and Apple currently labels it as coming in English. Availability will also depend on supported hardware, software, and region.
Faster loading and more reliable indexing
The current beta includes several changes that should be less visible but more important over time. MacRumors reports faster message loading, more reliable search indexing, and more reliable unread-badge syncing between platforms such as iOS and macOS. Apple’s iOS 27 beta 8 notes also record fixes for emails displaying content that did not match the subject line, incorrect delayed status in Mail banners for early flights, and a problem where Mail older than six months might not be searchable by body content.
Those release-note entries are fixes in beta 8, not promises that every Mail problem has been solved. Users installing the beta should expect indexing to take time after an update and should keep a backup of important information.
What users should expect
For most people, the meaningful change is not a new inbox layout. It is a Mail app that should make old messages easier to find and email details easier to turn into actions. Search improvements apply broadly to iOS 27-compatible iPhones, while Siri, Write with Siri, contextual suggestions, and Call Context require Apple Intelligence support and may launch with English- or region-specific limits.
Apple says iOS 27 is coming this fall. Until the final release, Mail’s search ranking, AI actions, language support, and reliability should be treated as beta behavior rather than finished product behavior.
