iOS 27 RC: Apple TV Remote app adds app launcher and Top Shelf
Hidden behind feature flags in the iOS 27 Release Candidate, the virtual Apple TV Remote gains a four-square app launcher and a Top Shelf pull-down—plus Home Screen placement returns.
The iOS 27 Release Candidate refreshes the virtual Apple TV Remote on iPhone with two new controls that MacRumors and code sleuth pdfu surfaced behind feature flags.
What’s new
- App launcher — A four-square glyph in the top-right of the Remote UI opens an Apple TV–style app grid so you can jump straight into an app without hunting through the TV UI.
- Top Shelf pull-down — Drag down from the top of the virtual trackpad to reveal the selected app’s Top Shelf carousel (watchlist / continue watching).
Both are currently flag-gated in the RC, so they may not appear for every beta installer yet.
Home Screen Remote (already in iOS 27)
Separately, iOS 27 again lets you put the virtual Remote on the Home Screen (search Spotlight for “remote”), not only Control Center—useful context for the same app surface.
Why it matters ahead of a new Apple TV
MacRumors notes prior macOS 26.7 code pointed to an upgraded with the next Apple TV 4K, still expected later this month or in October. These software Remote upgrades don’t ship that hardware—but they do make the phone-side remote more useful while you wait. (We’re still holding any hardware piece until a gated delta lands.)
