Five bio-detection dogs achieve 70% accuracy identifying hemangiosarcoma in blood samples—marking the first time dogs are trained to sniff out cancer in other dogs.
For years, trained medical detection dogs have astounded scientists by using their extraordinary sense of smell to identify human illnesses—from COVID-19 and diabetes to ovarian and pancreatic cancers. Now, in a historic first, dogs are using those superpower noses to save their own kind.
A pioneering research team at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) Working Dog Center has demonstrated that trained scent-detection dogs can identify hemangiosarcoma, one of the deadliest and most elusive canine cancers, by sniffing blood serum samples. As reported by the American Kennel Club, the study marks the very first time dogs have been formally trained to sniff out life-threatening disease in other dogs.
"What’s exciting about this research is that it’s the first study about dogs helping other dogs," explained Dr. Clara Wilson, a postdoctoral research fellow at Penn Vet’s Working Dog Center. "Until now, dogs haven’t been trained to sniff out diseases in other dogs."
Hemangiosarcoma is often feared as veterinary medicine's most insidious "silent killer." Originating in the endothelial cells that line blood vessels, this aggressive cancer spreads quickly and typically targets vascular organs like the spleen, heart, liver, and kidneys.
Tragically, the disease rarely shows obvious early warning signs. Tumors grow silently until they suddenly rupture, leading to acute internal bleeding, sudden collapse, and medical emergencies that leave pet parents with few treatment options. Hemangiosarcoma accounts for roughly 300,000 canine deaths each year in the United States alone—representing an estimated 5% to 7% of all canine cancer diagnoses.
While any dog can be affected, older, large, and deep-chested breeds face significantly higher risk, including Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, Boxers, and Portuguese Water Dogs. Routine diagnostics like X-rays and ultrasounds can spot internal masses once they form, but imaging alone cannot definitively distinguish hemangiosarcoma from benign tumors before surgery.
A dog’s sense of smell is estimated to be 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than a human's, powered by up to 300 million olfactory receptors. Led by Dr. Cynthia M. Otto, executive director of the Working Dog Center, researchers set out to see if dogs could isolate the unique odor profile of hemangiosarcoma.
Every living tissue sheds volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—microscopic gaseous molecules that evaporate into the air. While cancer odor profiles are extraordinarily complex and vary from patient to patient, the Penn Vet team hypothesized that hemangiosarcoma creates a shared, identifiable chemical signature.
To teach the dogs how to spot that common thread, handlers used specialized devices called olfactometers. These machines deliver precisely measured, filtered streams of air containing microscopic concentrations of blood serum odors without allowing direct contact with the samples.

Across hundreds of double-blinded trials, the dogs evaluated blood serum samples from dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma alongside samples from healthy dogs and dogs with non-cancerous conditions. The bio-detection team achieved an overall accuracy rate of 70%, proving that hemangiosarcoma indeed produces a distinct, detectable scent pattern in canine blood.
The ultimate goal of the project isn't to station scent-detection dogs in every neighborhood veterinary clinic. Instead, confirming that hemangiosarcoma leaves a detectable VOC footprint in blood opens the door for bioengineers to develop laboratory assays, blood tests, or sensor-based "electronic noses" capable of screening dogs during regular wellness exams.
Catching hemangiosarcoma before a splenic mass ruptures dramatically alters the prognosis. It allows families to plan surgical intervention, pursue emerging oncology therapies, and prevent catastrophic bleeding episodes.
