Qualcomm renews global patent licensing agreement with Apple, effective April 1, 2027

Qualcomm today announced the renewal of its global patent licensing agreement with Apple, effective April 1, 2027, according to MacRumors (Joe Rossignol, September 24, 2026). No further details were provided in the announcement as reported.

Patent license ≠ modem supply

This patent deal is separate from Qualcomm’s agreement to supply Apple with cellular modems for smartphone launches through 2026. MacRumors expects Apple’s custom-modem transition to continue.

How we got here

After litigation, Apple and Qualcomm settled on a six-year patent license beginning April 1, 2019. A two-year extension was exercised, pushing expiry to March 31, 2027. Reuters had reported that another two-year option was available — so the renewed terms could run through March 31, 2029 — but the length of this latest extension was not disclosed. Treat any end date beyond the April 1, 2027 effective date as unconfirmed.

Bottom line: Qualcomm and Apple are extending their patent relationship past the current March 2027 window; that does not by itself reverse Apple’s shift to in-house cellular modems on most new iPhones.
