PSA: watchOS 27 removes Digital Crown double-click app switching

On watchOS 27, double-clicking the Digital Crown no longer jumps between your current app and the last one (or between the watch face and the last app). MacRumors flagged the change as a launch-week PSA; 9to5Mac earlier spelled out why the gesture was reassigned.

What changed

Before watchOS 27, a Digital Crown double-click was the fast multitasking shortcut on Apple Watch. After the update, that same double-click opens the Dynamic App Grid — the same destination as a single click — so the old app-to-app jump is gone.

Apple has not published a Settings toggle to restore the prior behavior.

Why Apple reassigned the gesture

On Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, Digital Crown double-click is reserved for Live Rewind — a ~15-second spoken-audio transcript that arrives later in 2026 as part of Audio Intelligence. We covered the feature stack in our Series 12 / Ultra 4 announcement.

Older Watches lose the shortcut without getting Live Rewind

Live Rewind is hardware-bound to Series 12 and Ultra 4. Owners who update older models to watchOS 27 still lose Crown double-click app switching, and the gesture does not unlock Live Rewind as a consolation. That is the sting MacRumors emphasizes on launch day.

Series 12 and Ultra 4 availability begins Friday, September 18, 2026, with pre-orders already open (Series 12 from $399; Ultra 4 from $799).

Bottom line

Treat this as a shipping UX change on watchOS 27, not a rumor: useful muscle-memory multitasking is gone system-wide so new hardware can own the double-click later. Feedback to Apple is the only path MacRumors and 9to5Mac point to for a possible restore or Settings option in a point release.
