The same page states that carrier fees might apply when enrolling, and tells customers to contact their carrier for pricing. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro newsroom note repeats the launch pairing in a footnote: Handoff “will be available at launch with T-Mobile in the U.S. and Telekom Germany in Germany.”

MacRumors (Juli Clover) reported the same limit after Surprise and Shine, noting T-Mobile has not announced Handoff pricing.

How the feature works

Per Apple Support, you need two devices on iOS 27 or later that are on Wi-Fi, signed into the same Apple Account, using Messages in iCloud, and signed into FaceTime and iMessage.

Once enabled, one iPhone is the main device and the other is the secondary device sharing the number. Unlocking a phone activates the number there — Apple shows a “Switched to this iPhone” confirmation — and the number is active on only one iPhone at a time. Some carrier services (Call Forwarding, Caller ID, account management) stay tied to the main iPhone. iPhone Handoff does not move an Apple Watch pairing between phones.

Setup can happen during new iPhone setup or later under Settings → Cellular. Turning the feature off requires contacting the carrier; Apple warns that deleting an eSIM may not stop carrier charges until the service is cancelled.

Why it matters before September 14

iOS 27 launches Monday, September 14. Customers outside T-Mobile (U.S.) or Telekom Germany should not expect Handoff on day one, even after updating. The feature was also called out alongside iPhone Duo — a natural use case for keeping one number across a foldable and a smaller everyday phone — but carrier support remains the gate.
