Apple isn’t listing iPhone Duo’s under-display FaceTime camera megapixels
Apple’s iPhone Duo tech specs spell out a 12MP outer front camera and 48MP rear Fusion lenses — but the inner under-display FaceTime camera has no megapixel count, only ƒ/1.8 and 1080p video.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone Duo hides a FaceTime camera under the inner display — and unlike every other camera on the phone, Apple’s public tech specs still do not say how many megapixels it has.
MacRumors flagged the gap after checking Apple’s product pages. That reading matches Apple’s own iPhone Duo technical specifications, which we re-checked for this update.
What Apple does publish
On the Duo specs page, the outer front camera is explicitly a 12MP Center Stage camera. The rear 48MP Dual Fusion system lists Hybrid Focus Pixels and other detail — the same kind of labeling covered in our note on Duo’s Main camera wording.
The inner camera is described only as an under-display FaceTime camera with:
- Center Stage for video calls
- ƒ/1.8 aperture
- Tap to zoom and rotate
- Ultra-stabilized video
- 1080p video at 30 or 60 fps
- Animoji and Memoji in FaceTime, wide color for photos and Live Photos, lens correction, auto stabilization, QuickTake, Spatial Audio / stereo, wind reduction, and Audio Mix
There is no megapixel number, no 4K video mode, and no sensor-size note for that under-display unit.
What that implies — and what it doesn’t
1080p capture means the sensor is at least roughly 2 megapixels. MacRumors notes that the missing 4K option could point to a sensor under about 8MP, and that Apple’s silence may mean the count sits toward the low end of that range. That is inference from video modes, not a teardown or an Apple confirmation.
The ƒ/1.8 aperture is brighter than the outer front camera’s ƒ/2.2, which is a common way to offset light lost through the display stack — again without Apple publishing the resulting image-quality trade-offs.
The “smudge” on the inner screen
Hands-on coverage, including MacRumors’ report and Instant Digital footage it cites, still shows a small glossy or lower-density patch where the under-display camera sits. Samsung shipped under-display cameras on earlier Galaxy Z Fold models before moving the Galaxy Z Fold7 back to a conventional punch-hole — useful context that this is Apple’s first try at the approach, not proof of final image quality.
Buying timeline
None of this changes Duo’s schedule: Apple says pre-orders begin Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability Friday, October 23, starting at $1,999. Hardware authentication on Duo uses Touch ID in the side button, not Face ID — as covered when Touch ID returned on Duo.
