Hands-on iPhone Duo: crease still visible, but barely, MacRumors reports
After Surprise and Shine, MacRumors’ Juli Clover hands-on found the Duo crease minimized vs Samsung but still visible in some lighting, with Apple’s nano-texture inner display, under-display camera quirks, fixed Split View halves, and StandBy without charging.
After Apple’s Surprise and Shine unveil, MacRumors managing editor Juli Clover reported first hands-on impressions of the iPhone Duo — focused on the crease, software multitasking, and camera trade-offs rather than another announce omnibus.
Crease: still there, barely
Clover wrote that the fold is still visible in certain lighting, but Apple’s inner-display finish does a better job hiding it than Samsung’s current foldables in her view. She describes a nano-texture polymer surface with a micro lens texture written pixel by pixel (maskless laser lithography, as reported) that aims for a perceptually flat, matte feel.
Apple’s own Newsroom and product pages document a premium nano-texture finish that reduces glare and “minimizes crease visibility,” plus custom adhesives that let display layers glide past one another to relieve bend stress. Apple also notes a nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer. Longevity of crease visibility after months of folding remains an open question — Clover flagged that explicitly.
Under-display camera
There is no cutout on the inner display: Apple put the FaceTime camera under the panel. Clover observed it is effectively invisible on lighter screens but can appear faintly when the UI is dark — consistent with Apple’s claim that the under-display camera “stays hidden when not in use.”
Software: fixed Split View, tent StandBy
In Clover’s hands-on, Split View runs two apps (or two instances of one app) in fixed halves with no resize. Pairs can be locked to relaunch together. Software adapts open, closed, and half-folded postures; content can slide away from the crease, and audio tunes by position.
StandBy works in tent mode without charging, showing widgets, music, calendar, weather, and a glow alarm — matching Apple’s documented StandBy upgrade that works even when Duo is not plugged in.
Camera quirks
Duo’s dual rear cameras are a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Ultra Wide, with no Telephoto; 2× is a Main crop, per MacRumors. Clover highlighted fold-native camera modes (Smart Take, Kid Cue, Duo Preview, FaceTime Duo) and 4K Dolby Vision time lapses that benefit from propping the device open.
