Same A20 Pro era, very different jobs: foldable Duo vs traditional Pro. Displays, cameras, biometrics, battery claims, pricing, and when you can actually buy each.
After Surprise and Shine, Apple’s flagship phone question is no longer “Pro or Pro Max?” alone — it is traditional Pro vs foldable iPhone Duo.
This compare pulls confirmed Apple figures and the clear deltas outlets have mapped (9to5Mac, Apple Newsroom Pro, Apple Newsroom Duo). It is a decision piece, not another announce dump.
Form factor and displays
- iPhone Duo: book-style foldable with a 5.4-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR (nano-texture finish, ProMotion, Always On). Split View multitasking and partially folded StandBy are part of the pitch.
- iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max: single-slab phones in the familiar Pro sizes (about 6.3-inch / 6.9-inch class per outlet tables).
If you want one device that behaves like a compact phone and a small tablet, Duo is the new lane. If you want the familiar iPhone silhouette, stay on Pro.
Cameras: Pro still wins the imaging stack
iPhone 18 Pro keeps the clearer photography lead:
- 48MP Fusion Main with variable aperture, Telephoto, and Pro video tooling called out in announce coverage
- Duo brings dual 48MP Fusion Main + Ultra Wide and strong stills/video, but lacks the Pro variable-aperture Main and dedicated Telephoto stack that define the Pro line
Software exclusives also diverge (Duo: Smart Take / Kid Cue / Duo Preview; Pro: smart focus tracking, Pro controls, Apple Reference Image), per 9to5Mac’s side-by-side.
Biometrics, buttons, Pencil
- Duo: side-button Touch ID (multi-finger enroll), unlock-with-Apple Watch; no Action button; Camera Control present; Apple Pencil (USB-C) support later this year on either display (Newsroom)
- Pro: Face ID, Action button + Camera Control; no Pencil story
Battery claims (Apple video playback)
Quoted Apple numbers (use-case dependent):
- Duo outer display: up to 44 hours
- Duo inner display: up to 31 hours
- iPhone 18 Pro: up to 36 hours
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: up to 45 hours

Who each is for
- Choose Pro / Pro Max if camera system, earlier availability, and a lower entry price matter more than a folding canvas
- Choose Duo if Split View productivity, outer+inner display flexibility, and Pencil markup outweigh the $800+ premium and October wait
