iPhone Duo apps: three compatibility modes from letterbox to full screen
Apple’s Duo tech talks spell out three SDK tiers: older apps letterbox, iOS 27 SDK fills more of the inner display, and iOS 27.1 unlocks edge-to-edge layouts.
Buyers of Apple’s first foldable will not see every App Store title fill the 7.6-inch inner display on day one. Apple’s developer tech talks — summarized by 9to5Mac and AppleInsider — describe three compatibility modes keyed to which SDK an app was built with.
The three tiers
- Older / pre–iOS 27 SDK — The app runs, but on the open inner display it keeps a familiar phone-size aspect ratio with letterboxing (black bars / safe area). Outer display behavior stays closer to a conventional iPhone.
- iOS 27 SDK — The app extends further across the inner canvas (including past the status-bar / camera safe zone on the left in Apple’s demos), with less wasted space — but still short of true edge-to-edge.
- iOS 27.1 SDK — Full edge-to-edge layouts. Standard navigation and toolbar chrome can sit vertically under the status bar. This is the target for Apple’s own apps and any third-party title that wants the “launch video” look.
That ladder matches why iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1: full Duo layouts ride the same update wave as the hardware.
What buyers should expect
Until developers rebuild with Xcode 27.1, many apps will look obviously un-updated on the inner display — usable, but not immersive. Outer-screen use stays more forgiving.
