iPhone Duo is IP68 dust-tight — unlike Galaxy Z Fold8’s IP48

Apple’s first foldable already has a durability headline that matters for hinge phones: iPhone Duo is rated IP68 — the same splash-, water-, and dust-resistance class as recent non-folding iPhones.

What IP68 means on Duo

Apple’s Newsroom copy says Duo is splash-, water-, and dust-resistant with an IP68 rating under IEC 60529: up to 6 meters for 30 minutes in controlled lab conditions. The “6” is the dust score — dust-tight — which is the part foldable buyers usually care about most, because grit in a hinge is a known failure mode.

Apple’s usual caveat still applies: resistance is not permanent, can decline with normal wear, and liquid damage is not covered under warranty.

Why the Fold8 comparison stuck

Secondary coverage quickly contrasted Duo’s IP68 with Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold8 IP48 rating. IP48 still covers water immersion for Samsung’s class, but the “4” dust digit only claims protection against larger particles — not fine dust — which is a meaningful gap for a device with a moving hinge.

Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold is also described in secondary reports as IP68, so Apple is tying the top foldable dust class rather than inventing a new one.

Other durability notes Apple paired with IP68

Alongside the rating, Apple highlights Ceramic Shield 2 on the front (claimed 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation), Ceramic Shield on the back, a titanium frame, and a precision hinge built from more than 100 components. MacRumors also notes a 10-layer folding display stack in its durability write-up.
