MacRumors’ buyer’s guide (updated today) highlights a modem difference that only hits U.S. buyers of the larger phone.
What Apple lists
Per MacRumors’ reading of Apple’s specs:
iPhone 18 Pro — Apple’s C2 modem in every country.
iPhone 18 Pro Max — C2 outside the United States; U.S. units use a Qualcomm modem instead.
iOS code points to the same radio family used in last year’s Pro models (MacRumors says that would make it Snapdragon X80; a separate MacRumors note elsewhere has floated — treat the exact Qualcomm SKU as still unsettled until teardowns or RF tests land).

Why it looks real on paper
MacRumors cites a concrete band mismatch: the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro supports LTE Band 106; the U.S. Pro Max does not. That is the kind of listing difference that usually tracks different radios, not marketing copy.
Both radios are described as supporting sub-6 and mmWave 5G. Apple says C2 is faster and more efficient than C1X with AI-driven cellular quality improvements — but real-world Pro vs Pro Max comparisons on the same U.S. networks have to wait for shipping units.
Buyer takeaway
For most people the day-to-day gap may be small. The odd part is the more expensive U.S. model is the one that skips Apple’s own modem. If you specifically want C2 in the U.S., MacRumors’ conclusion is blunt: buy the smaller Pro.
