Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 Reported Using Far More Storage Than Apple’s Guidance
On macOS 27 Golden Gate, on-device Apple Intelligence models download automatically with no opt-out. MacRumors and other reports show System Settings readings well above Apple’s documented “up to 14GB / up to 8GB” figures.
After you install macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple automatically downloads multi-gigabyte on-device Apple Intelligence models the next time the Mac is online — and, unlike earlier releases, there is no toggle to stop that download. Using the features remains optional; parking the models on disk does not.
Apple’s support document says the next generation of Apple Intelligence needs up to 14GB of on-device storage on Macs with an M3 chip or later and at least 12GB of unified memory, and up to 8GB on other Apple Intelligence-enabled Macs. Models arrive with the OS 27 software releases on eligible devices.
Observed readings in System Settings are often higher. In a September 23 report, MacRumors measured 20.67GB attributed to Apple Intelligence on an M4 Pro Mac mini. The same piece cites Ars Technica reporting about 22.42GB on an M3 MacBook Air after a fresh macOS 27.0 beta 7 install, and roughly 14GB on an M1 MacBook Air and a MacBook Neo — machines that fall in Apple’s “up to 8GB” tier. User screenshots shared online have included readings around 24–30GB+.
Apple has not explained whether the Apple Intelligence category in System Settings → General → Storage maps one-to-one to the “up to X GB” requirement in its support article. That comparison remains unknown. MacRumors notes it has not seen the same ballooning pattern on iPhone and iPad running iOS 27 / iPadOS 27.
Secondary reporting has raised related storage questions. Eclectic Light has discussed figures that can land around ~30GB on some Macs, with nuance that some of that space may be treated as purgeable — without claiming Apple documents a full reclaim path for every user.
Bottom line: Apple documents modest ceilings; independent Mac measurements often read higher; whether those UI totals equal Apple’s published requirement is unexplained. Check your own Mac under System Settings → General → Storage (info button beside macOS).
