The hardware difference
M5 Max offers an 18-core CPU, up to a 40-core GPU, and up to 128GB of unified memory. M5 Ultra scales to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB of unified memory, with up to 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth. Both support Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Apple’s current media technologies.
Who should choose M5 Max
M5 Max is the sensible choice for most developers, photographers, musicians, designers, and video editors. Large codebases, photo libraries, multi-track audio, 3D work, and demanding 4K or 6K editing can benefit from its performance without requiring Ultra’s memory ceiling. Spending on sufficient unified memory and fast external storage may produce more practical value than buying the higher chip tier.
