What’s gone in macOS Golden Gate: Boot Camp, AFP, Time Capsule — and Rosetta’s path to macOS 28

MacRumors details Golden Gate’s Apple silicon–only cutover and removals of Boot Camp, AFP, and Time Capsule backups, plus Rosetta warnings ahead of an expected macOS 28 drop.
Upgrading to macOS Golden Gate means more than new features — several legacy Mac tools and services are gone, according to MacRumors (Juli Clover, Thursday, September 24, 2026, 4:06 p.m. PDT). If you still lean on Time Capsule, Boot Camp, AFP shares, or Intel apps via Rosetta, check this list before you move.
Apple silicon only — Intel stays on Tahoe
MacRumors reports that Golden Gate is the first macOS that runs only on Apple silicon Macs. Intel Macs cannot install it and remain on macOS Tahoe, with security updates planned through fall 2028.
Boot Camp Assistant is gone
Because Golden Gate does not run on Intel, Boot Camp Assistant is not supported. On Apple silicon, running Windows means virtualization software such as Parallels or VMware Fusion — not Boot Camp.
Rosetta 2: removable, reinstallable — and on a countdown
Per MacRumors:
- Upgrading to Golden Gate removes Rosetta, but you can reinstall it if an installed app still needs it
- Golden Gate is the last macOS with full Rosetta support
- In Golden Gate, Rosetta-dependent apps show a warning that they will not keep working without a developer update

macOS 28, expected in fall 2027, is reported to largely drop Rosetta 2 — most Rosetta apps will not open, with an exception MacRumors cites for some unmaintained legacy games.
AFP client and Time Capsule backups
Apple deprecated AFP in macOS Sequoia 15.5; MacRumors says Golden Gate has no AFP client at all. That breaks Time Capsule backups on Golden Gate Macs: Time Capsule needs AFP or SMBv1, while Time Machine now uses SMBv2 / SMBv3. Plan a migration off Time Capsule before upgrading if that is still your backup path.
AirPort Utility
AirPort Utility is not included on a fresh Golden Gate install. MacRumors notes that a pre-update copy may still work, but Apple makes no guarantee.
Practical checklist for upgraders
- Confirm your Mac is Apple silicon (Intel stays on Tahoe)
- If you need Windows: budget for Parallels / VMware (not Boot Camp)
- Inventory Intel apps via Settings → About → Intel-Based Apps; prefer native builds before macOS 28
- Move Time Capsule / AFP workflows to modern SMB or another backup target
- Keep a known-good AirPort Utility copy only if you still manage AirPort hardware — and treat it as unsupported
