The nearly 10-year-old Dachshund lost 13 pounds in six weeks through treat trails, puzzle feeding, and gentle swimming.
When Frank arrived at his rescue home in Ely, Minnesota, the nearly 10-year-old Dachshund weighed a staggering 37 pounds, his belly dragging across the floor with every labored step. Rescued after his previous owner was incarcerated, "Frank the Tank" found a second chance with the devoted caregivers at Dots Farm. Through gradual treat trails, puzzle feeding, and gentle hydrotherapy, the resilient senior shed 13 pounds in just six weeks—transforming from an immobile pup into an active, snuggly companion.
When Frank first arrived in the care of Minnesota Basset Rescue and was adopted by Dots Farm—an arm of the Contented Critters rescue in Ely, Minnesota—even minor movements required immense physical exertion. Tipping the scales at 37 pounds, the senior dog was carrying more than double the healthy weight for his frame. His belly brushed the floor whenever he shuffled forward, and brief strolls across the living room left him exhausted.
Yet despite his physical constraints, Frank’s warm and affectionate demeanor shone through immediately. He craved affection, leaned into gentle ear scratches, and made it obvious that he was ready to try if someone would help him take the first steps.
His caregivers knew that jumpstarting his mobility required extreme gentleness. For a Dachshund, whose elongated spine and short limbs make them vulnerable to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and joint deterioration, high-impact exercise was entirely out of the question.
Instead, the family started small. Outside, Frank was given brief yard excursions focused purely on sniffing and gentle exploration. Indoors, his family laid out spaced-out trails of low-calorie treats across the floor, providing him with a rewarding reason to shuffle from one room to the next.
To keep him active during meals, his caregivers swapped standard food bowls for a rolling dispenser ball. To eat his kibble, Frank had to nudge and follow the ball across the floor. While he was initially unimpressed by having to work for dinner, the puzzle feeder turned mealtime into a safe, engaging physical workout.
As Frank gained stamina, supporters rallied around his journey by donating a small pool, sweaters, and a supportive canine flotation vest. Swimming provided the ultimate zero-impact rehabilitation tool: water buoyed Frank's heavy frame, allowing his legs and core to paddle freely without placing weight or pressure on his spinal column.
Veterinary evaluations brought even more relief. Comprehensive bloodwork ruled out underlying hormonal complications such as Cushing’s disease and thyroid dysfunction, confirming that his challenges stemmed entirely from severe overfeeding and immobility.
Within his first four weeks, Frank dropped seven pounds. By the six-week mark, he was down to 24 pounds—a stunning 13-pound reduction that noticeably altered his silhouette and lifted his belly away from the carpet.
We can finally see light under the tunnel.
Online followers cheered the transformation, dubbing his progress a journey from "Tank" to "Swank." While his caregivers have set an ultimate target weight of around 17 pounds, the real victory is evident in his renewed quality of life. Frank can now navigate doorways without hesitation, explore the yard with eager curiosity, and enjoy his days without constant physical strain.
His vocal personality has flourished right alongside his mobility. Whenever Frank wants to cuddle on the bed or sofa, he lets out an unmistakable, theatrical howl until a family member comes over to hoist him up.
Frank’s inspiring rescue and health transformation serve as a touching reminder of the resilience senior dogs possess when met with patience, creative care, and unconditional love. No longer trapped by his own weight, Frank is spending his golden years doing exactly what he loves most: exploring at his own pace and soaking up all the snuggles he can get.
