When Historic Floods Hit an Indiana Shelter, 101 Dogs Found an Unexpected Path Home

As the White River surged past its banks in Anderson, murky floodwaters crept through the shelter doors, leaving staff minutes to move over a hundred terrified animals.

When sandbags proved no match for the rising tide, caretakers at the Animal Protection League realized their Dewey Street facility was about to go completely underwater. Central Indiana had just weathered nearly a week of relentless storms that dumped more than a foot of rain across the county, driving the river to a record crest not seen since 1913. Inside the building, kennels held 101 vulnerable dogs alongside roughly 200 cats, all needing immediate transport before the building became fully submerged.

What followed was an extraordinary mobilization of sheer community willpower. Shelter workers, local animal control officers, and dozens of neighborhood volunteers converged on the property with leashes, crates, and vans. Faced with dozens of dogs resting on bedding in fairground stalls, the rescue issued an urgent plea for temporary foster homes. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Families from across Madison County streamed in to open their living rooms, bedrooms, and backyards, ensuring that every single one of the evacuated pets secured emergency placement.

Then something remarkable began to unfold. Displaced rescue dogs that had spent months waiting behind kennel bars suddenly found themselves curled up on carpets, sleeping through quiet nights, and revealing their true, relaxed personalities.
