Two Labradors Soak in Panoramic Swiss Alps Views While Nervous Passengers Stir Up Drama

Two gentle Labradors soaked in panoramic Swiss mountain views despite grumbles from nervous seatmates.

As the red cogwheel train climbed steadily into the Bernese Alps, chocolate Labrador Hector leaned toward the open carriage window, completely mesmerized by the emerald pastures and turquoise lake glittering below.

A few seats over, however, a gentle shake of puppy Woody’s floppy ears was met not with smiles, but with an audible gasp of dismay.

The scenic journey aboard Switzerland’s famous Brienz Rothorn mountain railway was supposed to be a peaceful milestone for the British Labrador duo. Hector, a seasoned adventure companion, and Woody, his spirited younger puppy brother, were taking in their first major European road trip together. With cool Alpine air rushing through the open-air carriage, both dogs settled down against their owner, quietly watching the sweeping peaks and distant dairy cows roll by.

Yet on the ride up the mountain, a handful of neighboring passengers seemed determined to treat the calm pair like a looming hazard. According to the dogs’ owner, Alice, the commuters grew visibly anxious at every normal movement. When Woody flapped his ears or Hector gave a friendly thump of his tail against the floorboards, passengers gasped and recoiled. Even when nearby children giggled and pointed warmly toward the gentle retrievers, the uneasy seatmates voiced their frustration.

Alice took care to keep the boys tucked closely by her side, acknowledging that fear of dogs is a real condition that deserves consideration. Still, the contrast between the human tension and the dogs’ serene behavior was striking. Neither Labrador barked, lunged, or intruded on anyone’s personal space; they were simply content to watch Switzerland glide past.

Fortunately, the return leg of the trip offered a far sweeter turn. Noticing the uneasy dynamic on the mountain, a thoughtful Swiss train conductor stepped in and arranged for the family to ride down in an empty rear compartment. With the whole carriage to themselves, Woody and Hector stretched out comfortably, leaning their chins on the sill to drink in the panoramic view in absolute serenity.

When clip of the Alpine journey hit social media alongside the question of whether viewers would share a bench with the boys, dog lovers overwhelmingly rallied behind the four-legged travelers:

"Sit next to them?! Honey, I’ll sit on the floor with them!! Wherever they are. I’m there."
"Labradors are the sweetest dogs – I used to have one. I’d be honoured to sit next to them."
"The best seat in the house."

Switzerland has long been celebrated as one of Europe’s most dog-friendly destinations, where the national rail network and historic mountain railways routinely welcome leashed canine passengers into everyday transit life. For owners navigating public transit with a big, friendly Labrador Retriever, giving nervous seatmates extra buffer room and coordinating with conductors can make all the difference on a high-elevation travel day.

Judging by Hector and Woody’s blissful expressions against the Alpine horizon, having two fluffy travel companions by the window will always remain the finest seat on the train.
