Maya proved that locks are merely puzzles after executing an expert climb to the roof of her enclosure.
When staff members at Richmond Animal Care & Control walked into the shelter one morning, they had to do an immediate double take. Maya, a 5-year-old husky mix, was nowhere to be seen inside her kennel. Instead, the agile pup was casually perched right on top of it, beaming proudly from the wire roof like she had just paid rent.
"We were dying laughing and then really wondered how she managed it," Christie Peters, director of the shelter, shared with The Dodo. The staff quickly realized that the determined escape artist had scaled the enclosure walls and squeezed through a small gap near the ceiling, treating the locked room as nothing more than an interactive puzzle.
For the team who knew Maya's history, her mischievous high spirits were especially touching. Just a few months earlier, she had been rescued from a yard where an embedded chain around her neck caused severe pain and distress. Despite her rough past, Maya refused to let hardship define her, keeping everyone around her laughing with her boundless optimism and curiosity.
After retrofitting the kennel roof to keep the clever girl secure, the shelter found Maya a loving foster home where she no longer feels the need to plan daring escapes. Now, the affectionate problem-solver is waiting for the ultimate reward: a forever family to call her own.
