Developers can now submit apps optimized for iPhone Duo. Apps built with older SDKs will still run on the foldable, but in a window with empty space around it rather than edge to edge.
Apple is now accepting apps and games optimized for iPhone Duo in App Store Connect, the company said in an October 5 Apple Developer news post. That gives developers a little over two weeks before the foldable reaches customers on Friday, October 23, with pre-orders opening October 16.
Every existing iPhone app will run on iPhone Duo. How much of the inner display it uses depends on which SDK the developer built it with.
Apple's iPhone Duo preparation guide lays out three tiers:
MacRumors summed up the practical result: apps that aren't updated will show black borders on the inner screen. Folding or unfolding also resizes an app in the middle of a session, and Apple warns that apps with hardcoded screen sizes, fixed orientations, or assumptions that an iPhone is always compact can end up stretched, clipped, or misplaced.
Recompiling with Xcode 27.1 adds iPhone Duo support, and Apple's Device Hub lets developers preview an app across every pose and orientation. 9to5Mac reports that Apple released the first Xcode 27.1 release candidate on October 5. Apple's guide also points to an app resizability skill for the Xcode coding assistant that scans a project for common iPhone Duo layout problems, and Apple is hosting in-person iPhone Duo workshops.
On the App Store side, Apple has published new screenshot and app preview specifications for iPhone Duo, along with a preview tool in App Store Connect that shows how a product page will look on the device. iPhone Duo screenshots are optional for now, but starting April 2027 any app or game submitted will need to include them.
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 (U.S.). Pre-orders begin at 5 a.m. PT on Friday, October 16 in more than 70 countries and regions, with availability on October 23 and 28 more countries and regions following on October 30, according to Apple's announcement. Apple showed apps including Slack, Netflix, and Zoom running on the inner display in its launch materials.
The open question is the long tail. Large developers have had Xcode 27.1 betas for weeks, but smaller apps you rely on every day may not be rebuilt by launch. Those apps will still work, just in a window rather than edge to edge, so it's worth checking whether your essentials have been updated before you commit. We've also compared iPhone Duo with iPhone 18 Pro and covered its upcoming Apple Pencil support, and Apple is also reportedly planning a second wave of launches later this month.
