iOS 27 code shows Siri AI can swap in Claude or ChatGPT as the backend
Private frameworks in iOS 27 and macOS 27 show Model Delegation and Inference Providing paths that let third-party models plug into — or replace — Siri AI. Not a public switch yet.
On iOS 27 release day, MacRumors reports that code researcher pdfu has demonstrated private frameworks that go well beyond today’s built-in ChatGPT handoff.
The finding is about architecture already shipping in the OS, not a finished Settings toggle for every user.
Two different depths
MacRumors describes two mechanisms uncovered in iOS 27 and macOS 27 (Golden Gate):
- Model Delegation — Lets a third-party model such as Claude appear as a Siri extension the same way the built-in ChatGPT extension does. In the demo, choosing Claude from an Ask… menu, then asking it to set a Reminders item, has Claude interpret the request and hand system work back to Siri.
- Inference Providing (Model Manager Services) — Goes further: Apple’s own server-side Siri AI planner can be replaced by another model (the demo used GPT-5.6). That model receives Apple’s planner prompt and tool definitions, can request system actions and personal data results, then returns an answer that Siri still presents with its own UI and voice.
A second demo shows the swapped model finding emails on a topic, summarizing action points, and sending a Messages reply — with the model’s work also visible in OpenAI’s platform logs.
What is — and isn’t — available today
MacRumors is clear on the limits:
- On the macOS 27 Release Candidate, the front-facing Ask… menu still only exposes the ChatGPT extension; Claude is not a shipping user option yet.
- Apple has not opened the model-delegation entitlement to third parties, and the deeper swap path is not a public user feature.
- The work still shows how extensively Apple has engineered Apple Intelligence / Siri for future model interoperability — and may track with EU Digital Markets Act pressure around Siri access for rivals.
This sits beside today’s practical release notes — including the Notification Center gesture change when Siri AI is on and the OS 27 update how-to — as a code-backed roadmap signal, not a claim that you can already pick Claude or GPT as your default Siri brain in Settings.
