A person close to Foxconn’s supply chain told China’s Jiemian News that iPhone Duo final-assembly yields were only slightly above 60% as of mid-September — and mature yield may take 6–12 months under current quality standards. Pre-orders still Oct 16; availability Oct 23.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is still climbing the production ramp, according to a supply-chain report out of China — and the numbers, if accurate, point to tight early supply rather than a canceled launch.
Jiemian News (梁宝欣 / 李家琦) says a person close to Foxconn’s supply chain told the outlet that final-assembly yields for iPhone Duo were only slightly above 60% as of about September 17. Under Apple’s current quality standards, the same source said, reaching a mature yield could take another six months to a year. MacRumors (Hartley Charlton, Tuesday, September 29, 2026, ~6:16 a.m. PDT) summarized the same Jiemian account for English readers.
Treat this as reported anonymous supply-chain commentary — not Apple confirmation. Apple has not publicly addressed Duo assembly yields.
The Foxconn-adjacent source told Jiemian that the assembler is still tuning equipment, processes, and line settings as Duo scales — typical for a first foldable, the report argues, rather than a single unresolved tech blocker. Suppliers were said to be waiting on whether Apple eases any quality requirements to accelerate mass production.
Problems reportedly extend upstream as well. Jiemian said Samsung Display’s foldable OLED panels and hinge-related parts had seen low yields, delayed deliveries, and design changes — leaving less time for the final assembler to tune the line. The outlet also reported that Apple tested Liquid Metal for some hinge parts before reassessing the approach ahead of mass production. Apple’s own Newsroom pitch says the Duo hinge contains more than 100 components and uses a 3D-printed cover.
Separately, MacRumors notes a MyDrivers claim that one contract manufacturer asked Apple to choose between prioritizing yield and pushing output harder (with more scrap as the trade-off). That secondary report is unconfirmed here.
A supply-chain source told Jiemian that Apple’s global stocking target for Duo in 2026 is about 6–8 million units — far below a typical Pro / Pro Max cycle of 20–30 million, the outlet noted. A retail source separately said Apple’s sales guidance exceeds 5 million. For context, TrendForce (September 10, 2026) has estimated roughly 5 million Duo shipments in 2026.
None of this, on its face, moves Apple’s public calendar. Per Apple Newsroom: pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with availability Friday, October 23. Duo starts at $1,999 in the U.S.
This yield-% / quality-tradeoff angle is distinct from older low-volume assembly chatter (e.g. earlier Nikkei-style “few hundred units a day” notes). Early buyers should still expect constrained stock if the Jiemian figures hold — without treating a delay as confirmed.

Bottom line: Jiemian’s Foxconn-adjacent source puts Duo final-assembly yield at just over 60% in mid-September and says mature yield may take 6–12 months unless Apple softens quality bars. Pre-order (Oct 16) and availability (Oct 23) dates remain Apple’s published plan.
