The practical upside remains: Duo is still the first iPhone that can keep Messages open beside Safari, open two windows of the same app, swap apps quickly, and save app pairs for later — in both landscape and portrait.
Why a fixed split is likely
MacRumors’ likely explanation tracks Apple’s own Newsroom geometry pitch: the inner and outer displays share a 1:1.4 aspect ratio, and each half of the inner canvas maps roughly to the outer screen’s shape. An even split puts the divider on the fold and gives each app a size developers already have to support. Dragging the boundary around would create awkward in-between sizes that may not map cleanly when content moves to the outer display — and would complicate iPhone app layouts.
One apparent exception in Apple’s promo videos: watching Apple TV content above another app in portrait, with the video kept in its proper aspect ratio while the lower app rises above the fold.
