Alicia Silverstone Rescues Heavily Pregnant Dog Hours Before Euthanasia, Welcoming 12 Puppies

A desperate plea to save one shelter dog turned into a miraculous rescue of thirteen lives.
A heavily pregnant terrier blend huddled inside a crowded Southern California animal control shelter, her name placed on the urgent euthanasia list as kennel space ran out.
Hours later, an emergency social media alert caught the attention of Alicia Silverstone. The longtime animal welfare advocate and actress sprang into action, sending an urgent plea to Mike Arms, president and CEO of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe. Neither knew that the ticking clock wasn't just counting down for one vulnerable canine, but for an entire family about to enter the world.
A race against the shelter clock
Noel, a sweet three-year-old mixed-breed pup, had initially sought shelter at a roadside motel near San Bernardino to give birth. When taken to a local municipal shelter already overwhelmed by high intake numbers, she was scheduled to be put down within twenty-four hours.
After receiving Silverstone's text, Arms and his team didn't hesitate. The rescue center dispatched staff on a 100-mile drive north to pull the mother dog to safety, as first reported by The Dodo.
Twelve puppies arrive in the nick of time
Just as the rescue team stepped in, Noel went into labor. She delivered a massive litter of fourteen puppies, with twelve surviving pups receiving round-the-clock medical care and warmth alongside their devoted mom. Because the delivery unfolded right around the holidays, staff christened the brave mother Noel and named the litter after the "Twelve Days of Christmas" — including Drummer, Piper, Swan, and Partridge.
“The day they were going to kill her, she happened to have her babies, which is kinda crazy,” Silverstone shared in an interview with FOX 5. “They’re so cute. And my son and I were just in a puppy pile with them.”
Silverstone reunited with Noel and her babies weeks later, opening her own home to foster four of the growing pups until they were ready for adoption. For Silverstone, whose household has long welcomed foster pets alongside her beloved rescue dogs Pinto Bean and Tiny, fostering offers overcrowded facilities crucial breathing room while fragile litters gain strength.
Shifting the spotlight to shelter orphans
The dramatic turnaround highlights the reality faced by municipal shelters across the country, where staff frequently grapple with overcrowding and limited foster networks. Noel's story inspired organizers to name Silverstone the Featured Luminary for the 14th annual Remember Me Thursday campaign on September 24.
