Overlooked in a Shelter for Two Years, Black Lab Becomes Global Disaster Search Hero

Surrendered for having too much energy, Roma transformed into a world-class disaster rescue dog.
Standing above the wreckage of a collapsed apartment complex in Venezuela, Roma caught the faint scent of human life drifting up through shattered concrete and twisted rebar. She didn’t hesitate — scrambling across the unstable debris until she locked onto the exact pocket where people were trapped in the dark.
Behind her, Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighter Derek Moree watched her posture sharpen. Roma had signaled a live find, guiding international urban search and rescue crews to locate and pull more than a dozen survivors from the rubble. For the six-year-old Labrador Retriever, navigating catastrophic destruction is now second nature — but only four years ago, nobody seemed to want her.
Too energetic for family life, built for the rubble
Roma spent the first two years of her life behind kennel bars at a shelter in Pasadena, California. Potential adopters walked past her day after day. Like many young, high-drive retrievers surrendered by families who find their intensity overwhelming, Roma possessed boundless stamina and an obsessive toy focus that ordinary households struggled to manage.
Yet those exact traits are precisely what disaster recruiters look for. Rather than seeing an unruly pet, an observant shelter employee recognized that Roma's relentless motor belonged on a working search team and alerted the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation. After joining the foundation's training program, Roma sailed through rigorous obstacle courses and agility challenges, learning to ignore chaotic distractions and focus exclusively on live human scent. She was soon matched with Moree as part of California Task Force 2 (CA-TF2 / USA-2).
Turning high drive into a life-saving mission
By March 2024, the pair earned full FEMA disaster search certification, qualifying them for rapid federal and international deployments. When severe twin earthquakes struck Venezuela in June, Moree and Roma were flown directly into the epicenter of the crisis alongside fellow canine search teams.
“A dog’s abilities to determine if someone is buried in rubble is critical, as it allows search and rescue teams to dedicate time and resources to the right areas,” Moree explained in a press release reported by The Dodo. In tight, precarious voids where human rescuers cannot safely squeeze, a canine nose remains the fastest tool in the world to separate dust from a beating heart.
Honoring shelter pets with extraordinary potential
To honor her journey from overlooked kennel resident to international rescuer, Roma received the Pet Hero Award at the annual Remember Me Thursday ceremony hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, California. The event highlights millions of animals still waiting in shelters worldwide — proving that dogs who struggle in standard domestic settings often possess remarkable working talents.
Along with a commemorative plaque, Roma was awarded a full year's supply of Blue Buffalo dog food.
