Sometimes you just need someone to lie down beside you.
Cassondra unlatched the kennel gate, expecting the three-year-old pup to bolt into the sunshine and stretch his legs after another long night behind chain link.
Instead, Dodger took only a few cautious steps into the play yard, sank heavily into the cool green blades, and gently rested his chin against the ground.
For Dodger, a 56-pound Mixed Breed staying at the Maui Humane Society in Puʻunēnē, Hawaiʻi, the constant commotion of kennel life had taken a heavy toll. Like many dogs waiting in busy shelters, the unfamiliar smells and echoing barks left him emotionally drained.
“Usually when I take dogs out to the yard they are excited and run around a bit, stretch their legs,” shelter volunteer Cassondra Christman explained. “But Dodger just plopped down and laid down and started falling asleep.”
Rather than coaxing him up to chase a ball or pace the fence, Cassondra recognized what he needed most. She lowered herself flat onto the lawn right beside him, resting her head on the grass so he would not have to carry the quiet alone.
Cassondra shared the video on her Instagram account, @cassondrachristman, capturing the quiet truth of how exhausting shelter life can be for a sensitive pup.
The tender scene resonated deeply with dog lovers online, who rallied with words of love and encouragement:
“He is scared and sad being at the shelter,” Cassondra shared. “It has to be so confusing for these pups to go thru ending up at the shelter, waiting, wondering where their people are.”
