When the first loud crack of thunder rattled the windows across South Florida, Michael went looking for his rescue dog, Cactus — and found him huddled quietly in the back corner of the shower stall.

Stepping into the bathroom, Michael gently stroked Cactus's head and softly let both dogs know they were safe. Cowboy happily bounced toward the doorway the moment Dad approached, but Cactus hesitated, lingering a few seconds longer in the stall before working up the courage to step out into the hallway.

Once they reached the living room, Michael offered Cactus a far warmer sanctuary than a shower floor. Sitting down on the sofa, he gathered the trembling pup directly into his lap, wrapping both arms around him with gentle kisses and steady reassurances.
