TechInsights: U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max teardown confirms Snapdragon X80 modem

TechInsights has published a preliminary teardown of a U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max (model A3473) that confirms Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem inside — not Apple’s custom C2. MacRumors’ Joe Rossignol flagged the finding Friday afternoon Pacific time.

That matters for who is affected: U.S. Pro Max buyers appear to be the exception. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo use Apple’s C2 worldwide, and Pro Max uses C2 outside the U.S., MacRumors reports. Earlier launch-week chatter speculated Qualcomm vs C2 (and sometimes X85); this teardown is physical confirmation it is X80 on the analyzed U.S. unit.

What TechInsights says it found

On the analyzed A3473 board, TechInsights identifies:

• Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 5G modem marked SDX80M
• Qualcomm SDR875 converged RF transceiver
• A newly identified Apple mmWave antenna module marked 339M00418
• Apple’s A20 Pro application processor with LPDDR5X memory
• Apple N1 wireless combo module (marked 339M00479), plus UWB and other RF/power parts from suppliers including Broadcom, Qorvo, Skyworks, and others

TechInsights notes the Qualcomm modem is notable because Apple has promoted C2 as part of the iPhone 18 Pro platform — and says further analysis is still underway on modem configurations, N1 silicon, and the redesigned mmWave module.

Modem firmware had already pointed toward X80 before the teardown, MacRumors adds; the board markings now back that up for this U.S. sample.

Who gets C2 vs X80

Per MacRumors’ roundup of Apple’s documented lineup and reporting:

• iPhone Duo: Apple C2 worldwide
• iPhone 18 Pro Max: C2 in every country except the U.S., where this teardown confirms Snapdragon X80

Apple’s C2 supports ultra-fast mmWave 5G in the U.S. (unlike C1 / C1X). Apple has said C2 delivers “meaningfully faster uploads” vs C1X while using 15% less energy — claims about C2 vs X80 performance are still untested in public comparisons.

Why only U.S. Pro Max?

Apple has not explained why only the U.S. Pro Max still ships with Qualcomm silicon. MacRumors notes Qualcomm previously said it would supply Apple smartphone modems through 2026, so contractual continuity is one common speculation — not a confirmed reason.
