Gurman: Apple smart home display window narrows to as soon as October

Apple’s long-rumored smart home display could arrive as soon as October, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman — narrowing a window he previously framed as “before the end of 2026.”

MacRumors relays Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter: the product is reportedly in extensive employee home testing, with software references tying a tabletop model to internal code J490 and a wall-mount variant to J491 (both among unreleased identifiers seen in macOS Tahoe 26.7). Roundups from Engadget and MacDailyNews track the same Bloomberg reporting. Apple has not confirmed a launch date, SKUs, or pricing.

• Form factor: A compact, roughly square screen — smaller than many Amazon Echo Show models — in two versions: a desk/counter stand (described in some accounts as resembling a HomePod mini cut in half) and a magnetic wall mount. Households may be expected to use more than one unit.
• Software: A dedicated OS built around Siri AI, with visual cues drawn from iOS, tvOS, and watchOS — Home Screen, widgets, and selectable clock faces for always-on glanceable info. Gurman has said delays stemmed from Siri readiness; that blocker is described as largely cleared after iOS 27 shipped Siri AI this month (see also our iOS 27.2 developer beta 2 note).
• Camera personalization: Video calls plus camera-based recognition of household members — reportedly without Face ID–style depth sensing — to surface that person’s calendar, notes, preferred media, and news.
• Roles: Smart home controls, intercom, music/video, and apps such as Calendar, Notes, and Reminders. An iPhone is required for setup and some connected features.
• Home hub strategy: Under CEO John Ternus, Gurman frames the display alongside Apple TV and HomePod as the at-home counterpart to the iPhone’s mobile center.

Uncertainty to keep

“As soon as October” is still a window, not a confirmation. Some secondary write-ups still leave room into early 2027. Price has not been freshly verified in this Gurman update (older mid-$300-class guesses for a tabletop unit remain unverified).
