Shelter Staff Shocked To Find Rescued Husky Casually Sitting On Top Of Her Kennel
After expertly breaking out of her covered enclosure, 5-year-old Maya perched on top of her kennel like it was completely normal.
When staff at Richmond Animal Care & Control walked into the shelter, they had to do a double take. Maya, a 5-year-old husky mix, wasn't resting inside her assigned kennel. Instead, the clever dog had scaled the enclosure walls, squeezed through a gap near the ceiling, and made herself right at home standing on top of the wire cover.
"We were dying laughing and then really wondered how she managed it," Christie Peters, director of Richmond Animal Care & Control, told The Dodo. The shelter posted the hilarious moment online, joking that Maya was casually hanging out like she paid rent and reminding everyone that locks are merely puzzles to a determined husky.
Her mischievous stunt was especially heartwarming to staff who knew her painful past. Maya had been rescued months earlier after officers found her suffering with a heavy chain wrapped tightly around her neck. Despite the severe discomfort she endured, her joyful spirit remained completely unbroken, earning her a reputation as an exuberant, happy-go-lucky dog who loves life and everyone in it.
Following her grand escape, shelter workers retrofitted her enclosure to keep her safe, but Maya has since moved into a cozy foster home where she no longer feels the need to pull off Houdini acts. Now, her caretakers are hoping this brilliant problem-solver will soon find her forever family.
