Puppy Found Floating in Scrapyard Pond Begins Remarkable Recovery After Rescuers Step In

Rescued from critical injuries and neglect, sweet puppy Pretzel is embracing a hard-fought road to recovery and a bright second chance.
A Good Samaritan pulled up to a muddy scrapyard pond off a Texas highway, spotting a tiny white bundle floating motionless in the water.
Moments earlier, an urgent report had alerted her to an abandoned animal trapped beside the busy road in Cleveland, Texas. When she rushed to the edge, someone had already pulled the puppy out of the murky pond and laid her on the bank — but whoever pulled her out had vanished, leaving the critically hurt puppy stranded on the gravel with no way to walk or seek help.
Rushing a critical survivor to emergency care
The rescuer immediately contacted ThisIsHouston Rescue (TIH), who dispatched transport to bring the injured pup straight to an emergency veterinary clinic. Rescuers named her Pretzel. Upon arrival, veterinary staff discovered that the young Great Pyrenees puppy had endured days of severe trauma, suffering from extreme malnourishment, open fractures on her hind leg, and severe anemia requiring an immediate blood transfusion.
“It's unknown how long she was in the water,” Karlin Medlin, TIH’s medical coordinator, explained. “Life has not been kind to her, and she has probably been on her own for a while.”
Choosing comfort and trust through a difficult recovery
Despite her exhaustion and painful wounds, Pretzel surprised everyone on the veterinary team with her gentle, sweet temperament. Instead of lashing out from fear, she melted into every touch, welcoming soft blankets and warm reassurance as staff initiated a strict refeeding routine to help her safely gain weight without shocking her system.
“She was obviously in shock and very weak, but very accepting of help,” Medlin recalled. “I personally went to the ER to see her, and she was calm and quiet, and seemed to love the head rubs and baby talk from me.”
A brighter horizon on three paws
Because Pretzel’s broken hind leg had suffered severe tissue infection and bone damage long before her rescue, veterinarians determined that amputating the leg was the safest path forward. Young puppies are remarkably resilient, and tripod dogs quickly learn to balance and run without the chronic burden of an infected, painful limb holding them back.
“Her future is very bright!” Medlin said. “She is young and will adapt very well. We will work hard to heal her physical wounds, as well as her little heart and spirit.”
Once her surgical recovery and physical rehab are complete, the team will begin searching for a forever family ready to offer the devoted rescue dog the secure, heartwarming life she has fought so bravely to reach.
