Apple quietly limits Texture and Grain Photographic Styles to iPhone 18 Pro and Duo

Apple revised its iPhone 18 Pro Newsroom footnote so Texture and Grain apply only to photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and select Duo cameras — not the broader “latest Photographic Styles” set implied at launch.
Apple has quietly narrowed who can use the new Texture and Grain controls in Photographic Styles.
According to reporting by MacRumors (Tim Hardwick, Sep 22, 2026) and corroboration from The Mac Observer, Apple’s current documentation no longer matches the broader compatibility language that accompanied the iPhone 18 Pro launch.
What changed
At launch, Apple’s Newsroom press release said Texture and Grain would be available in iOS 27 on iPhone models that support the “latest generation of Photographic Styles.” That phrasing — still mirrored in some third-party copies of the launch-day text — led many readers to expect support across the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series, and iPhone Air, which Apple’s iOS 27 User Guide groups with iPhone 18 Pro under the latest Photographic Styles generation.
Apple has since revised the footnote on its iPhone 18 Pro Newsroom announcement. Footnote 4 now states that the new Texture and Grain controls are available only for photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and with the Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on the iPhone Duo.
Apple’s iOS 27 User Guide similarly ties changing photo texture to iPhone 18 Pro models, according to MacRumors.
What we do not know
Apple has not commented on the revision. It is unclear whether the company originally planned wider support and later changed course, or whether the launch wording was simply published in error. Treat this as a documented documentation change, not a confirmed intentional strategy shift.
The Mac Observer notes Apple has not publicly identified a processor, sensor, or memory requirement that would explain excluding recent non-Pro and older Pro models.
Who gets Texture and Grain today
Based on Apple’s revised note:
- Included: photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
- Included (when Duo ships): Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on iPhone Duo
- Not included under current wording: the broader “latest Photographic Styles” set (iPhone 16 / 17 / Air and other models that share Photographic Styles generation language but are outside the revised footnote)
Photographic Styles remain tone and color presets that adjust look while aiming to preserve skin tones; Texture and Grain are the newer creative dials Apple highlighted alongside the 18 Pro camera system.
