watchOS 27.2 beta 2 brings App Switcher back — with a new gesture

MacRumors (Tim Hardwick, Tuesday, September 22, 2026, ~1:41 a.m. PDT) reports that App Switcher is back in the second watchOS 27.2 developer beta — but not on the Digital Crown gesture many Watch users still muscle-memory.
What changed in watchOS 27
On watchOS 26 and earlier, a Digital Crown double-press opened App Switcher so you could jump to the last-used app, browse recent apps, and swipe left to force-quit a misbehaving one.
In watchOS 27, that same double-press is reserved for Apple’s upcoming Live Rewind AI feature (a transcript of what was said in roughly the last 15 seconds). Crowns no longer summon App Switcher, which fueled worry the multitasking screen was gone for good — the friction we covered in our Digital Crown double-click PSA.
The new gesture (beta observation)
According to MacRumors’ write-up and a user clip it embeds, watchOS 27.2 beta 2 reinstates App Switcher with a new launch gesture: press and hold the bottom of the screen while you are in an app.
Digital Crown double-press stays reserved for Live Rewind. Apple has said Live Rewind is due later this year on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 — consistent with our earlier Live Rewind / Audio Intelligence deep dive. That is not a claim that App Switcher itself is already shipping in the public watchOS 27 release.
Evidence language
This is a developer-beta observation, as reported by MacRumors from the second watchOS 27.2 beta (seeded alongside the broader 27.2 beta 2 wave). It is not confirmation that App Switcher with the new hold-bottom gesture is already in the public watchOS 27 release channel.
Bottom line
Apple appears to have answered the loudest watchOS 27 multitasking complaint without giving Live Rewind’s Crown double-press back: App Switcher returns in 27.2 beta 2 via a bottom-of-screen press-and-hold, while Live Rewind keeps the Crown. Whether the gesture survives to public 27.2 is still a beta-story caveat.
