Jogger Follows Cries From a Hole in the Ground and Rescues a Puppy Trapped in a Pipe

Jogging along an isolated countryside road in rural Brazil, veterinarian Letícia Leitão expected nothing more than a peaceful weekend workout in what she described as "the middle of nowhere." But as she passed a stretch of red dirt, the silence was shattered by high-pitched, desperate cries rising straight up from the earth. Looking closely, she spotted a small opening in the ground leading down into a broken drainage pipe.

Peering into the dark gap, Leitão couldn't see anything at first, but the urgent whimpers were unmistakably those of a young dog in trouble. "I immediately suspected something might have gone wrong," Leitão told The Dodo. "So, I decided to investigate." Just as she knelt down, an adult female dog appeared nearby, watching closely like an anxious mother. Patiently calling into the hole, Leitão gently coaxed the frightened pup forward until he finally scrambled out of the pipe and back onto solid ground.

Once the little pup was safe, the grateful pair refused to leave Leitão behind. Both dogs trotted faithfully in her footsteps for the rest of the journey, keeping her company on the quiet road and following her straight into her aunt's house, where they curled up beside her while she ate lunch. Leitão later learned that the duo belonged to a neighbor and had simply wandered off on an adventure gone awry—but thanks to one runner who stopped to listen, both pups made it safely back home.
