According to Japanese veterinarian Dr. Shuntaro Hara, as reported by udn Pets, dogs are remarkably keen observers who quickly clock when their owner's gaze drifts elsewhere. Driven by affection and anticipation, they push into your view to reel your focus straight back where they believe it belongs: on them. If your pup barely bothers you during other tasks but suddenly becomes your biggest shadow the moment your hands touch your phone, they have learned that this little device is their main rival for your affection.

While it is tempting to instantly surrender and shower them with affection the second they block your view, Dr. Hara explains that dropping your device every single time can accidentally train them to pester you even more. Instead, offer a calm, gentle word or a soothing pat to acknowledge their feelings without immediately turning it into playtime. To enjoy peaceful screen time later, try setting your pup up for success first—either by engaging them in a focused play session beforehand or tossing them a favorite puzzle toy so their emotional cup is already full.
