FCC filings give a first look at LG's Apple-codeveloped thermostat, lock, and sensor

FCC filings give a first look at LG's Apple-codeveloped thermostat, lock, and sensor

A radar-equipped thermostat, a coin-cell temperature sensor, and a deadbolt in Graphite and Silver that uses ultra-wideband to tell when you're at the door.

LG's filings with the US Federal Communications Commission include label drawings, 3D renderings, and test reports for three of the smart home accessories that Bloomberg says Apple helped develop: a thermostat, a temperature sensor, and a deadbolt lock. MacRumors surfaced the documents on October 7, and the code sleuth known as pdfu posted images and settings for the same three devices that day, as 9to5Mac reported.

Apple isn't named anywhere in the filings. Its involvement comes from Bloomberg's October 6 report, which said LG will sell the accessories under its own brand while Apple helps shape their design, features, and engineering.

LG Smart Thermostat

The thermostat, model TMCTAW5W, has a round, puck-like body with a raised edge and runs on a 24-volt AC supply, the standard for most home heating and cooling systems. Its FCC record, 2BO3L-TMCTAW5W, lists 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread, plus a radar operating around 61 GHz. MacRumors notes the radar could allow presence or approach detection, though the filings don't say how it's used.

According to pdfu, the settings include a "Far Sight Display" option, a humidity readout, brightness and language controls, and options to calibrate or offset the temperature reading. A Matter logo and setup code sit on the back of the unit.

LG Temperature Sensor

The sensor, model TMST2A6W, is a small round unit powered by a CR2477 coin battery, with Bluetooth Low Energy and Thread for connectivity. pdfu says it measures both temperature and humidity, sticks magnetically to metal surfaces or to an included adhesive plate, and alerts you when its replaceable battery runs low. Remote sensors like this are commonly paired with smart thermostats to read conditions in rooms other than the one where the thermostat is mounted.

LG Smart Deadbolt Lock

The lock appears in Graphite (TMCDD15G) and Silver (TMCDD15S) versions. Its interior unit is tall with curved ends, holds four AA batteries, and has a large rotating section across its lower half. The FCC record, 2BO3L-TMCDD15, covers Bluetooth, Thread, NFC, and ultra-wideband.

The most telling detail is how it unlocks. An accompanying FCC document describes a two-step process: the lock first verifies a compatible device's access credentials over Bluetooth, then uses ultra-wideband to work out where that device is before granting entry. That lines up with the proximity unlocking Bloomberg described, and with hands-free unlock with home keys, which Apple added to the Home app in iOS 18 to open supported locks once you're about six feet from the door.

pdfu adds that the keypad rotates open, with a swivel pin that can keep it from swinging into a nearby wall. Settings cover the touchpad's light ring, a "Door Left Audio Alarm," and lock volume, and the lock reportedly supports automatic unlocking, tap to unlock, emergency power, and master codes. It comes with two mechanical keys and fits doors with 2.375-inch (60.3 mm) or 2.75-inch (69.9 mm) backsets.

What's still missing

The three devices are part of a seven-product lineup. Images of the other four, a wired video doorbell and indoor, outdoor, and floodlight cameras, haven't surfaced yet. Labels on the filed devices also reference a Hyundai HT Global factory in Vietnam.

Don't expect any of them next week. Apple is set to introduce its home hub alongside a new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini on October 13, while Bloomberg says the LG accessories are at least a few months from stores. Apple's own privacy-focused home camera that sends text alerts instead of video is a separate project, and Gurman said on X after his report that it is still planned for next year. Which of LG's Apple-codeveloped accessories would you be most likely to buy?
