Apple Bars Walk-In iPhone Duo Buys at Japan and South Korea Stores

Apple Bars Walk-In iPhone Duo Buys at Japan and South Korea Stores

Apple’s Japan and South Korea sites say nearby Apple Stores will not sell the latest iPhone Duo or iPhone 18 Pro Max without a reservation for now. Launch day is Friday, October 23.

For a limited time, customers in Japan and South Korea cannot buy the latest iPhone Duo or iPhone 18 Pro Max at a nearby Apple Store without a reservation, according to notices on Apple’s localized sites. We independently confirmed the wording on Apple Japan’s iPhone page and Apple Korea’s retail finder.

Japan’s banner reads, in translation: for a while, nearby Apple Stores will not sell the latest iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max without a reservation. Korea’s retail page states that iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max cannot currently be purchased in-store at Apple Store locations.

MacRumors (Joe Rossignol) and Japanese outlets including iPhone Mania and Gadget Gate reported the same official notices.

What this means for launch day

iPhone Duo arrives in stores Friday, October 23. Under these notices, showing up at an Apple Store in Japan or South Korea without a pickup reservation should not get you a Duo (or an 18 Pro Max) on the spot. Apple has not said how long the restriction lasts, or whether other countries will get matching banners.

Apple’s online store has separately told shoppers interested in reserving Duo for Apple Store pickup to check back on Saturday, October 24, MacRumors notes. Carrier stores and third-party retailers are outside the scope of these Apple Store notices; walk-in stock there is still unlikely to be plentiful.

Not the same as the U.S. online two-unit cap

This is a retail walk-in / reservation rule in Japan and South Korea, not the U.S. online checkout limit of two Duos per customer we covered earlier. Different channel, different markets, different reader job.

An earlier Oct 17 MacRumors report that some Apple Store managers privately told staff to discourage walk-in Duo hopes is softer and anecdotal; it is not the same as these country-site banners. Apple has not publicly explained the Japan/Korea notices. Supply pressure after extraordinary Duo demand and Apple’s usual anti-scalping posture in parts of Asia are the commonly cited reasons in secondary coverage.

Should Apple extend reservation-only Duo store sales beyond Japan and South Korea?
