Apple beta code points to four-HomePod surround sound for Apple TV

Apple TV owners may soon be able to build a full surround setup out of HomePods. Code in the third beta of audioOS 27.2, the software that runs on HomePod, includes new references to a speaker "surround system," and the third macOS 27.2 beta adds two SF Symbols showing four speakers arranged around a room. The findings come from code explorer pdfu on X and MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, and were reported by MacRumors and 9to5Mac.

Today, any Apple TV 4K can use two HomePod or HomePod mini speakers as a stereo pair for its audio. Nothing about a four-speaker option is switched on in the betas, so the details could change before Apple announces anything.

What the new code shows

In early September, pdfu reported that Apple had tested connecting four HomePods to an Apple TV 4K, placed front-left, front-right, rear-left, and rear-right. The latest betas add more detail:

• Speaker matching: Siri can match a speaker to its surround system. pdfu quotes a diagnostic message that reads "Accessory [X] is a speaker in surround system [Y]," which relies on HomeKit exposing a surroundSystem interface.
• Siri handoff: When a HomePod is part of a Home Theater group for an eligible Apple TV, it can use a new path to pass Siri requests to the Apple TV. An older path that forwards microphone audio to the Apple TV is still there.
• New symbols: Two SF Symbols in macOS 27.2 beta 3 show a group of four speakers in a room. One looks like a top-down view of HomePods, and the other's name refers to a home theater setup. Neither name mentions HomePod directly.

Which hardware it may need

That part is still unclear. pdfu said Apple tested two layouts: four second-generation HomePods, and two second-generation HomePods up front paired with two unreleased speakers in the rear. It's also unknown whether current Apple TV 4K models will support four speakers or whether the feature will be limited to new hardware.

The timing lines up with Apple's next launch. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said Apple will announce a new Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, and its HomePad home hub on October 13, while the full-size HomePod will be updated "eventually." The same round of betas also includes references to Apple Intelligence and Siri AI on the new Apple TV.

Also spotted in the betas

pdfu also found that Apple TV profile pictures are set to go beyond emoji, adding characters from Apple TV shows and movies such as Ted Lasso and Mark S. from Severance. Separately, 9to5Mac says Perris found iOS 27.2 code suggesting nearby home accessories could show controls in the iPhone's Dynamic Island.
