LG's Apple-codeveloped doorbell and cameras leak, and iOS 27.2 code adds Schneider to Apple's 'second-party' Home program

LG's Apple-codeveloped doorbell and cameras leak, and iOS 27.2 code adds Schneider to Apple's 'second-party' Home program

Schneider's thermostat and sensor sit alongside LG's gear in a new tier of Home accessories that get NFC pairing and their own setup animation.

The four products still missing from LG's Apple-codeveloped smart home lineup have now surfaced. X user @ringo_tech posted images and component details on October 7 for the LG Video Doorbell Wired, Floodlight Cam, Outdoor Cam Plug-In, and Indoor Cam Plug-In, hours after leaker pdfu showed the lock, thermostat, and temperature sensor. Later that day, pdfu turned up something with wider implications in iOS 27.2: LG isn't the only company in what Apple's code calls its "second-party" accessory program.

Schneider joins LG in the second-party table

According to pdfu, iOS 27.2 contains a list of Home accessories marked as second-party. Apart from LG's products, it names two from Schneider: a Schneider Home Smart Thermostat and a Schneider Electric Temperature/Humidity Sensor. Only the thermostat has setup artwork so far, and it's a placeholder, but its setup configuration mentions proximity settings.

AppleInsider counts ten entries in the table:

    • LG: Smart Thermostat, Smart Deadbolt Lock, and Temperature/Humidity Sensor, each paired with a second entry carrying a "GEMS" label that hasn't been explained.
    • Schneider: a thermostat, a QA variant of that thermostat, a temperature and humidity sensor, and one unidentified entry that may be a test version of the sensor.

The designation matters because of what comes with it. pdfu says second-party accessories "receive special treatment by the OS," and AppleInsider reports that the table ties them to features such as NFC pairing and a dedicated setup animation. That would set them apart from the many accessories that show up in the Home app simply because they support Matter.

Schneider is a less surprising name than it might seem. The French energy-management company is a member of the Connectivity Standards Alliance behind Matter, and it already uses the Schneider Home name for its US home energy app and lineup, which covers solar, backup batteries, EV charging, and connected switches. Both Schneider entries are climate devices, with no lock or camera in the list.

What the code doesn't show is how involved Apple was. Bloomberg reported that Apple helped shape the design, features, and engineering of LG's accessories, but there's no equivalent report for Schneider. For now, the second-party label only tells us that Apple's software treats these products as a separate tier.

    The doorbell and three cameras

The ringo_tech thread, which 9to5Mac notes comes from an account with a small following but a solid record on smart home accessories, describes the hardware this way:

    • Video Doorbell Wired: a main camera plus a second camera facing downward, an AC/DC converter, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi with WPA2 and WPA3 security, and a Thread antenna.
    • Floodlight Cam: separate left and right lights, infrared LEDs, an ambient light sensor window, a microphone and speaker, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Thread and NFC antennas. It shares design elements with the outdoor camera.
    • Outdoor Cam Plug-In: a ball-joint mount and power adapter, infrared LEDs, a microphone and speaker, O-rings and waterproof grease for sealing, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Thread and NFC antennas.
    • Indoor Cam Plug-In: a motor-and-gear mechanism that appears to tilt the camera vertically, Hall sensor components, infrared LEDs, a microphone and speaker, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Thread and NFC antennas.

The product names match the regulatory listings Bloomberg cited in its original report. The NFC antennas in all three cameras would also fit the NFC pairing AppleInsider describes for second-party accessories, though none of the cameras appear in the iOS 27.2 table yet.

    What to expect next week

Apple is expected to introduce its home hub, a new Apple TV 4K, and HomePod mini 2 on October 13. With second-party code already in the betas, AppleInsider expects the program to come up alongside that hardware, though Apple hasn't confirmed anything. Don't expect the accessories themselves right away: Bloomberg said LG asked regulators to keep photos and detailed specifications confidential until early next year, and that the products are still months from stores.

Apple's own home camera, which would send text alerts instead of video, remains a separate project planned for 2027.

Would Apple's 'second-party' label make you pick one smart home accessory over another?
