Tesla has registered seven purpose-built Cybercabs in Texas days before its September 3 launch event in Austin, adding the first vehicles without a steering wheel or pedals to the state’s public automated-vehicle roster. The records are a concrete regulatory step, but they do not by themselves show that paying passengers can book a Cybercab.
The seven 2026 Cybercabs appear under Tesla Robotaxi, LLC in the Texas Motor Carrier and Automated Motor Vehicle Operator Lookup, according to records reported by Teslarati and corroborated by coverage from Tesla North and Drive Tesla Canada. Their VINs begin with the 5YJA prefix, distinct from the 7SAYG prefix associated with Tesla’s Model Y robotaxis.
The additions bring Tesla’s authorized Texas robotaxi list to 276 vehicles in the initial records: 269 Model Ys and seven Cybercabs. Later reports said the Cybercab count rose further, but the public listings and tracker totals have changed quickly, so the seven-vehicle figure is the clearest initial snapshot rather than a permanent fleet count.
Texas’ self-certification framework for commercial Level 4 automated vehicles requires operators to file with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, maintain insurance and keep an active vehicle list. Registration means Tesla has taken the legal step needed for these vehicles to operate commercially on Texas roads. It is not the same as a public launch, a safety finding or permission to operate everywhere.
Tesla has confirmed an invite-only Cybercab event in Austin on September 3 and plans to livestream it. The company has not publicly said that general riders will be able to request a Cybercab immediately after the event, how many cars will carry paying passengers, or whether early rides will be demonstrations, employee trips or regular Robotaxi bookings.
The Cybercab is designed as a two-seat robotaxi with no steering wheel or pedals. That makes it materially different from the Model Y vehicles currently used in Tesla’s paid Robotaxi service. Consumer Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is also a separate product: a customer-owned Tesla still requires an attentive driver and should not be confused with Tesla-operated, geofenced Robotaxi service.
The timing matters because Tesla is moving the Cybercab from production and testing into the same regulatory pipeline as its existing fleet. The next useful confirmation will be an official deployment count and a clear explanation of who can book a ride, where those rides can go and what remote assistance or operational limits remain.
