Texas records now list 420 vehicles for Tesla Robotaxi, including 45 Cybercabs, as the company prepares to show its steering-wheel-free vehicle in Austin.
Tesla’s Texas robotaxi registry now lists 420 vehicles, including 45 purpose-built Cybercabs, ahead of the company’s September 3 launch event in Austin. Reuters reported the updated count from state records, which also list 375 Model Ys under Tesla Robotaxi, LLC.
The larger registry is a concrete fleet and regulatory step, but it does not show that all 45 Cybercabs are carrying paying passengers or operating without remote assistance.
Texas records cited by Reuters showed Tesla’s listed fleet rising from 314 vehicles earlier on September 3 to 420 by Wednesday evening. The same count included 45 Cybercabs and 375 Model Ys. Waymo, the larger U.S. robotaxi operator, had 988 vehicles registered in Texas, according to the report.
The Cybercab count had previously risen from seven vehicles first visible in the state’s public automated-vehicle records to 45. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles’ Motor Carrier and Automated Motor Vehicle Operator Lookup identifies Tesla Robotaxi, LLC as an authorized operator and maintains the public vehicle list.
Texas’s active-vehicle listing is evidence that Cybercab has entered the state’s commercial automated-vehicle system. It is not proof that every listed vehicle is dispatched, accepting fares, or running without remote assistance. Reuters also reported that Tesla has not said whether it has received regulatory approval or determined that the service complies with federal safety norms for commercial operation.
Tesla has said in its second-quarter 2026 update that Cybercab production had started, production-vehicle engineering test drives were under way on public roads, and employee rides had begun at Gigafactory Texas in July. The company describes the vehicle as a purpose-built autonomous EV intended to become the workhorse of its Robotaxi fleet.
The Cybercab is Tesla’s dedicated two-seat robotaxi design. Unlike the Model Y vehicles currently used in Tesla’s Robotaxi service, it is designed without a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla’s Austin event is invite-only, and the company has given few public details about whether the event will include passenger rides or when regular riders could request Cybercabs.
For now, Tesla owners and Austin riders should not assume that a registered Cybercab is selectable in the Robotaxi app. The practical change is that 45 purpose-built vehicles now appear in Texas’s authorized records. The next confirmation to watch is an actual passenger-service listing, a stated fare or service area, and clear information about supervision or remote assistance.
