Tesla Expands Austin Robotaxi Geofence to About 288 Square Miles

\n\nTesla has expanded the operational geofence for its driverless Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, by about 9% to roughly 288 square miles, according to independent comparisons of the service map posted on August 31. The change is the first reported Austin boundary expansion in about 10 months.\n\nThe revised map pushes coverage north toward Pflugerville along the US 183 corridor and adds neighborhoods that were previously outside the operating area. Riders can request trips in the added territory only when the full route remains inside Tesla’s digital boundary.\n\n## What changed for Austin riders\n\nThe expansion adds approximately 24 square miles to the earlier zone, which covered about 264 square miles. It may make more pickups and drop-offs possible in northern Austin, but it does not make Robotaxi service available across the entire metropolitan area.\n\nTesla’s Austin service is still a geofenced operation. Availability depends on the vehicle supply and the route shown in the Robotaxi app, and a larger boundary does not by itself prove that Tesla has expanded the active unsupervised fleet at the same rate.\n\nThe Austin update follows a larger reported expansion in Dallas and comes as Tesla prepares a September 3 launch event for its purpose-built Cybercab. Tesla’s official Robotaxi page says Cybercab will begin offering rides in the future; it does not establish that every Austin rider will be able to request one at the event.\n\nTesla has also said its unsupervised fleet is “a lot bigger” and that vehicle-distribution and routing improvements are reducing wait times, but it has not published a complete fleet count alongside the Austin map change. The next useful confirmation will be whether the app consistently accepts trips across the newly added area and whether Cybercab rides become available to ordinary riders.
