Tesla Robotaxis Appear to Go Fully Unsupervised in Austin Ahead of Cybercab Launch

Independent tracking points to a larger change in Austin’s Robotaxi operation, but Tesla does not publish fleet-level details and the data does not establish how remote assistance is used.

Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin appears to have moved to fully unsupervised rides, according to independent fleet tracking reported by The Verge. All 170 Austin rides monitored over a recent two-week period were logged without a human safety monitor in the vehicle, involving 54 different cars.

The finding matters as Tesla prepares to add its purpose-built Cybercab to the Austin operation. Unlike the Model Y vehicles currently used for Robotaxi rides, the Cybercab is designed without a steering wheel or pedals, so there is no onboard driver who can take over if the system encounters a problem.

This is not a Tesla fleet announcement. Robotaxi Tracker uses app users and other crowdsourced or public information to log rides, and its creator told The Verge that some earlier metrics had lagged before data sources were revised. The Verge reported that the Austin change appeared real, while noting that Tesla does not publish detailed fleet data and did not respond to its request for comment.

“Unsupervised” also does not necessarily mean that no human is involved anywhere in the operation. A person may still provide remote assistance or authorization over a data connection, but the available reporting does not establish how often that happens or how many vehicles one remote operator can cover. The timing raises the stakes for Tesla’s Cybercab rollout. The company has been testing the two-seat, control-free vehicle with employees and training Austin first responders to move it during an emergency, according to The Verge. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system remains a driver-assistance product for consumer vehicles, and the Robotaxi service’s operating status should not be presented as proof that consumer Teslas can drive without supervision.

The independent data represents observed rides rather than every trip. The same reporting identified a recent incident in which a Tesla Robotaxi drove through plastic bollards in Austin, underscoring why the size of the unsupervised rollout and the system’s response to unusual road conditions remain important questions.

What would confirm the development is a direct Tesla fleet announcement or a regulator or operator filing identifying the Austin vehicles and their operating conditions.
