iOS 27.2 beta code lets Safari log Google's Chrome promotions and how you respond

iOS 27.2 beta code lets Safari log Google's Chrome promotions and how you respond

Safari can spot the banners Google uses to push Chrome and the Google app, then record whether you tapped or dismissed them. Apple hasn't said why.

Apple is testing a way for Safari to keep count when Google pushes Chrome. Since the second iOS 27.2 beta, Safari has carried code that detects banners on Google's pages promoting Chrome or the Google app and records how people respond to them, 9to5Mac reported on October 5. iThinkDifferent, PiunikaWeb, and Apfelpatient have since picked up the find.

Apple hasn't documented the behavior. It isn't mentioned in iOS 27.2 beta 3 or in the Safari 27.2 beta release notes, and there's no guarantee it ships in the final update.

How the code works

According to 9to5Mac, the system works in three steps:

  • Injection: Safari loads a JavaScript file into certain Google home and search results pages.
  • Detection: The script looks for visible banners or other page elements meant to get you to open or install Chrome or the Google app, recognizing them by the apps' custom URL schemes and App Store IDs.
  • Logging: When it finds one, Safari can record whether the banner appeared, whether you seem to be signed in to a Google account, and whether you interacted with it, then file the result as accepted or dismissed.

Nothing in the code reported so far blocks or hides the promotions. Safari only observes them.

Why Apple might want the data

Apple hasn't explained the code, but it arrives as regulators look closely at browser competition on the iPhone. In the UK, Google has pointed to its efforts to promote Chrome to iPhone users as evidence that it competes with Safari, while regulators have examined whether the search agreement between the two companies weakens their incentive to compete on browsers. In the EU, the Digital Markets Act sets rules on browser choice and defaults, and the European Commission has previously investigated whether Apple's browser choice screen complied.

Figures on how often Google shows these prompts, and how many people act on them, could matter in either setting. They could also simply tell Apple how hard Google is working to pull people out of Safari. The DMA has already shaped iOS 27 in Europe, where Apple is holding back Siri AI for iPhone and iPad owners.

When iOS 27.2 arrives

iOS 27.2 is on its third developer beta. The same build added per-type switches for Messages suggestions and a new Apple Music logo. iPhone Duo launches with iOS 27.1 on October 23, and Apple has said new Siri AI languages in iOS 27.2 arrive in October, so the update is expected shortly after.
