macOS 27.2 beta 3 adds touch gesture code to Safari, Photos, and Notes ahead of touchscreen MacBook Pro

macOS 27.2 beta 3 adds touch gesture code to Safari, Photos, and Notes ahead of touchscreen MacBook Pro

The strings are only hints, and some could serve iPad Sidecar instead. Here is what was found and how it fits the late-2026 launch window.

Apple's third developer beta of macOS 27.2 Golden Gate, released Monday, contains new code for touch-specific gestures in several built-in apps, according to MacRumors. 9to5Mac credits the find to MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris. It is the latest software sign that Apple is preparing macOS for its rumored OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro.

What's in the code

The beta references new gesture recognizers in four apps:

  • Safari: a "touch sentinel recognizer"
  • Photos: PXGTouchDwellGestureRecognizer
  • Notes: ICTouchPressGestureRecognizer
  • Quick Look: a "dragTouch" feature

The names suggest dwell, press, and drag interactions built for a finger rather than a pointer. For now they are code references only. Nothing in the beta turns them into working features, and Apple has not said what they are for.

In the same build, a developer who posts as @madeby_ldt spotted a new long-press animation for Dock icons, which 9to5Mac flagged as another possible touch hint.

The Sidecar caveat

There is a second plausible explanation. macOS Golden Gate already brought full touch input to Sidecar, the feature that lets an iPad act as a display for a Mac, so these recognizers could simply extend that work. MacRumors says the code is "not a clear indication of a new Mac." AppleInsider argues the answer is most likely both, since one round of touch work would benefit Sidecar and a touchscreen MacBook Pro at the same time.

How it fits the touchscreen MacBook Pro rumors

The new code builds on earlier touch-friendly changes in macOS Golden Gate, including pull-to-refresh in Safari, Mail, and Calendar. According to 9to5Mac, Bloomberg has also reported that tapping a control will bring up relevant touch options, and tapping the menu bar will automatically enlarge its controls.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said the macOS changes for touch and the Dynamic Island will arrive alongside macOS 27.2, and he still expects the laptop in October or November. His latest report adds that the redesign will be significantly lighter thanks to reworked internals. The machine is expected to keep the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. MacRumors has floated "MacBook Ultra" as a possible name, but Apple has not confirmed any branding.

Apple has not announced a touchscreen Mac. Until it does, treat these strings as hints about direction rather than evidence of specific features or timing.
