Elon Musk has again said Tesla will add pothole avoidance to FSD, but no release date or supported vehicle list has been announced.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says pothole avoidance is coming to Full Self-Driving (Supervised), reviving a feature request that has been in Tesla’s orbit for years. Musk did not provide a software version, release date, market, or vehicle list, so owners should treat the statement as a future development rather than a feature now available across the fleet.
The immediate news is a short reply from Musk to a driver asking FSD to make small steering adjustments around potholes: he said the capability is “coming soon.” The statement is evidence of intent, not a published rollout commitment.
Tesla has also listed “Add pothole avoidance” among upcoming improvements associated with FSD v14.3. That listing supports the idea that the company is working on the problem, but it does not establish that the feature is enabled in current production software.
Some Tesla drives have already shown FSD positioning a vehicle so a large pothole passes between the tires. Those observations do not prove a dedicated pothole system: the vehicle may be treating the damaged pavement as a generic road hazard, and behavior can vary by road, visibility, vehicle hardware, software build, and market.
The practical goal would be more consistent path planning around damaged pavement, not permission for drivers to stop paying attention. FSD (Supervised) remains a driver-assistance feature; the driver must monitor the road and be ready to take over. Tesla has not said whether the planned behavior will steer within a lane, change lanes, slow down, or combine with suspension controls.
Tesla has discussed pothole detection and rough-road responses since at least 2019. Model S and Model X later received automatic adjustments for some upcoming rough roads through map data, but that is narrower than a confirmed, general-purpose pothole-avoidance feature for FSD.
For now, owners can watch the vehicle’s release notes and check the software screen for an actual update. A future announcement should specify the supported hardware, regions, software version, and whether the feature is supervised-only.
