Apple VP Kate Bergeron says iPhone Duo’s nano-texture cover layer above the foldable inner display can be peeled off and replaced; U.S. AppleCare service pricing lists the swap at $19.
Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, said the iPhone Duo’s nano-texture cover layer above the foldable inner display is replaceable — customers can peel it off and get a new one, MacRumors reports (Joe Rossignol, October 1, 2026). The comments came in an interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi, also covered by 9to5Mac (Ryan Christoffel, October 1, 2026) and AppleInsider (Wesley Hilliard, October 1, 2026).
“It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” Bergeron said, per MacRumors and 9to5Mac.
Apple’s Newsroom unveil already described a nano-textured cover layer on the inner display — a custom polymer Apple says can be up to 40% stiffer than other materials used in the industry — plus a scratch-resistant coating. Bergeron’s new detail is that the layer is designed to be swapped when wear or crease visibility becomes an issue, after “a significant amount of engineering work” to make it last as long as possible.
The cover layer helps minimize glare and hide the crease in the middle of the foldable inner panel. It is not the same as the outer display’s Ceramic Shield 2 glass.
In the U.S., customers with AppleCare coverage for iPhone Duo can get the cover layer replaced for $19, according to Apple’s service pricing as reported by MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and AppleInsider (first flagged via Quinn Nelson / SnazzyLabs). The out-of-warranty / without-coverage price has not been disclosed in those reports.
Official replacement will likely run through Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers. MacRumors and AppleInsider both caution that it remains unclear how DIY-friendly the peel-and-replace process will be for end users — wait for hands-on service guidance before trying it yourself.
Bottom line: An Apple hardware VP has now confirmed that Duo’s inner nano-texture cover layer can be replaced, and U.S. AppleCare pricing puts that service at $19. That is a concrete durability answer ahead of October 16 pre-orders — still treat self-service DIY as unconfirmed until Apple documents the process.
